is the brainchild of John Stephenson. John has been in the creative wood industry for many years. After such time, he has seen many needs from the artist to the consumer. several of his products and inventions address such needs.

John is an urban forester and business ownerHe is also a consultant with the Forest Products Lab in Madison, WI. He has been involved in the Federal urban wood utilization study 2012. John was involved in developing software for the U.S. Forest Service for urban wood utilization and is a committee member for Wisconsin Urban Wood (WUW), a non-profit organization for advancing the utilization of the timber and logs being removed from the urban forest in Wisconsin.

Route 66 - project with rights & ethical sourcing

The Route 66 Collection is a series of showpieces for those familiar with and fond of author John Steinbeck's "Mother Road," from his novel The Grapes of Wrath, which is the ribbon of roadway history that runs from Chicago, Illinois to San Bernardino, California. These items were cut from original bridge stringers that spanned a dry arroyo outside of Amboy, California. The bridge was disassembled and retired in 2018 then sent for testing at a Federal lab in Wisconsin. It is just one in a series of bridges being replaced by California highways. I was able to salvage these one-of-a-kind 30'x6"x14" stringers after testing was completed and repurpose them to the Route 66 collection.
The Doug fir lumber was cut from old growth trees in about 1930 and put into bridges on Route 66 across Southern California. Seeing service uninterrupted until modern vehicles became too heavy to support today's trucks, these pieces are from a tree that at the time of harvest was over 300 years old. Many of the pieces I have created still have metal bridge fasteners and hardware embedded in them and add to the patina of America on the move.
